Play as an Amazon, barbarian, or dwarf as you travel level by level, battling waves of enemies until your reach the would-be ruler’s castle gates. Then, just when everything’s looking grim, a band of heroes steps in to save the day and wrestle back control.
The premise, you ask? It’s the typical fantasy story, where an evil usurper captures the royal family as well as a rare artifact known as the Golden Axe. Still, we’d be remiss to exclude such an excellent game, especially one crafted by Sega themselves. Why is Golden Axe so high on our list of best Sega Genesis beat ’em ups? As instrumental as this title was in cementing the genre in popular culture, it was more of a hack ‘n slash game than a tried ‘n true beat ’em up.
